IFX Monthly Challenge Winner

August 12, 2012

My creepy ass piece won the Imagine FX Monthly Challenge for July.  I’m still fixing some things that really bug me, but regardless, I really learned a ton working on this.  The given theme was “With Science” and the following is a bit of creepy text I included with it.

By day he shuffles about dusty libraries, sifting his rickety fingers through decaying books. His peers mock him, even pity him, but In the pale night, he satisfies his dark curiosities with great wisdom and science.  His subjects, all volunteers; victims of war, disease, and general misfortune. Grateful and loyal, they do his bidding. They are his disciples, his lovers, his strange, fantastic warriors.

Farseer Wip

A forum challenge themed “Farseer” and fully open to interpretation.  Thought I’d have a go at something soft and blendy, just to expand my brain.

Hell’s Belles

January 26, 2010

Retail work is a bit depressing but art is keeping my spirits aloft. Here’s a screen-shot of my progress for this weeks MyFX challenge. The given theme for this one is Hell’s Belles. I’m having fun so far.

First Work Of 2010

January 4, 2010

Here’s my entry for this weeks MyFX forum challenge. The set theme for this one is “It Came From Below”.

My entry didn’t quite jell with the challenge, but I really dig it. I started with a squid-like creature bursting from the ground, but ended up here. I had a lot of fun with the bits of crap breaking apart everywhere and the strange colors scheme. Heh Heh… personal joke really.

Cyborg Warfare Challenge

December 30, 2009

This week I joined in on another ImagineFX weekly challenge. For this one I’m taking the new ArtRage Studio for a spin and loving it.

Her’s my work in progress. I’m shooting for something subtle which is certainly a challenge with a title theme like Cyborg Warfare.

MyFX Forum Challenge

alien2hsmlI joined in on this weeks challenge themed: Illegal Alien. I didn’t think I would come up with anything, but alas I did.

On the left is one I started but ran out of time. Meet Eddie Mugsworth, aka Gippy da’ Creep. Relatively well known in the theft rings for slipping out the back door with everybody’s goods. Best known for his troublesome infatuation with Female Earthlings. In fact, right now he’s supposed to be on look-out duty for Fiona!… Oh Gippy… Distracted yet again.

The bottom image I finished enough to enter. Meet Fiona… Intergalactic Diamond thief. Daughter of the legendary Albert Novik, aka Stealth McGrabby. Fiona may have just been caught with her hands in the cookie jar but she’s gotten out of far stickier situations. If there are police around, then there’s a shiny, high speed shuttle waiting to be hijacked.

3bA little somethin’ somethin’ using ArtRage & my new tablet. Did I mention that I’m in love with my new tablet (a small Intuos4). To start with, the surface feels much more natural. My old Graphire is so dang slippery. I have to press everything way too hard to get any results. Just writing my name or signature is near impossible.

If you have an old Graphire with a clear, hard plastic cover…. upgrade! Don’t be stubborn. Trust me, I scratched away on that crap for a good three years.

Oh, I also posted some new beach sketches here.

Challenge WIP

Here’s my current work in progress for the Dark Queen challenge.  I liked the queen by herself, but I had to add the king for the storytelling element. I’m still monkeying about with the over-all design, but it’s a fun switch-up from what I’ve been doing as of late.drkqueen-x2final

MyFX challenge 121 (Dark Queen)

April 26, 2009

drkqueen-1h2_smAs the winner of the last challenge, it is my duty to set up the next one.  I chose Dark Queen as the theme because I thought it would be swell. Maybe a little too swell. Now I can’t resist joining in. Like I said before, I should be focusing solely on polishing the work I already have. He! Ho! Ha! Well, the truth is, that I’m doing both.

Shhhhh…. All is well…… All is on schedule.  Anyhoo, I’m taking a break from my epic syndrome and taking a shot at something using an approach I haven’t used in a while. Virtually no blendy blend.

ImagineFX Weekly Challenge

April 25, 2009

war-2swebFor last weeks forum challenge (Gods of War and Destruction) I explored unfamiliar territory. You know, space ships n’ stuff.  Zow! Zow! Vummm! Swoosh! Bazeeooow! Fizzzkk! Swoosh!

The image below is what I came up with and it’s the first time I tackled something of the sorts. To me it looks like a cover to a Sci-Fi novel or video game box. Yeah, the kind of game that looks pretty cool because of the box, but when you get it home and play it- it’s all crummy, and looks nothing like the art. And to top it off, It doesn’t even have the same freakin’ ships in it! Swoooosh! Zumm! Zumm! BezeeeeoooW!

Anyway, my image took first place by a hair.  Or should I say beard?  The runner up was an amazing painting inspired by Norse mythology.

One More Challenge…..

April 19, 2009

war-thmbSooo…. I  really should be polishing the work I already started, but I had to have one more go at the weekly ImagineFX challenge.  The theme is Gods of War & destruction. I started off with an idea about a god overlooking a castle siege, but after vomiting (twice) from concept boredom- I started to develop a Sci-fi piece!?  I’ve been focusing on figures for so long I figured (ha!) I’d dive into unfamiliar territory.  I pretty much never draw ships and stuff, so this should be fun.

The three, large ominous shapes are the Nogchampa Wachoochoo gods ( Leaches of Death & Destruction) from Maetidup Tribal Folklore.  Where there is war, they gather to feed.  Legend has it, that they are looked down upon by all other gods, but year by year they grow larger and their power increases.  Eventually they will no longer scuffle about at the heels of the greater gods.  Blah… Blah….  That’s the way the legend goes anyhoo.  Here’s what I did this Sunday afternoon.

ImagineFX Forum Challenge 2

April 10, 2009

deepdive-final-thmbSooo…. To continue developing my portfolio, I entered another online challenge this week.  The theme was “Life Aquatic” and the image I submitted really pushed me to figure out a crap-load of stuff.  Bubbles, Jellyfish, Deep sea strippers!  I’m tellin’ ya, it was rough.  Seriously though, I learned so much!  There were all these mini accomplishments that happened while I worked.  It’s really pretty funny though, because I started with such a god awful sketch/comp. I even  referred to it as cat barf  on the forum.  I started my project by scribbling a deep-sea diving type helmet, and then… out of the blue (ha! snort! get it?) I thought Deep Sea Strip Club.  Yep, there’s something mighty amusing yet truly depraved about the concept.  We’re not talking dancers in oversized fish tanks here, we’re talkin’ unda da sea with barnicles, Tintin, and Spongebob.  The lecherous viewers actually dive down in their big clunky  suits to get in this joint.  Blub blup blup… Welcome to the DEEP DIVE baby.  (can’t believe I just said that)

Below are some progress shots, including the cat barf I started with.  This is the certainly the most complicated piece I’ve done. I still have some work to do (fish, muck, lighting etc..).  I might be able to make this a real knock-out portfolio piece with a bit more fuss and goo.  You know, “Fusss & Goo”… It’s an old adage from the 14th century.  For Example: Leonardo’s painting could do with a bit more Fuss & Goo.

ImagineFX Forum Challenge

March 24, 2009

Well, here we are… I entered an online challenge this past Sunday.  It all started when I stumbled across the challenge section of the ImagineFX forums, and decided it was time. This will be my first venture into competitions of the sort and I’m mighty excited about it.  It’s already pushing me to quickly apply my skills under a deadline (outside of school).  Below are some snapshot peeks at my progress thus far.  The theme of the challenge is Heavy Metal, and the deadline is this Friday.  I’m pretty busy, but I should have something pretty solid by the end of the week.  Many of the participants (including myself) are relating the challenge’s theme to the covers of the delightfully testosterone laden Heavy Metal fantasy magazine. Oh yeah… Boobs, Guns, Swords, Monsters, Robots.  Let the challenge begin!

Senior Presentation (AKA Babes & Goats)

March 5, 2009

As some of you may know, I finished school this last December.  At LCAD every senior is required to produce a Senior Capstone thesis paper, as well as a Capstone Presentation. For me, the paper was a real challenge to write, but it really helped me develop my philosophy regarding art, and the directions I wanted to take my art.  The Capstone presentation however, had me tied in knots.  I had to get up and present something to a room full of students, their family, and a  heap of teachers and staff members.  Gaaghh!  At first I wanted to run for the hills, but then I came up with a plan.  I realized I couldn’t go wrong as long as I put the extra time into putting together a solid presentation.  Also, my project was all about hot babes and cute little goats.  How do you mess that up?  Really…

The following video is the one part of my presentation that I can share here. The video shows the development of nearly every piece I created for my senior portfolio project, including sketches and notes. If you’re craving a larger version, you can find it here: LARGE VIDEO

On the big day it was announced that my paper was nominated for best Senior thesis. I can’t even begin to explain the irony.  The greatest Irony of all however, is that tomorrow I will be presenting my presentation all over again.  This time in front of the 2009 seniors.  “Why?” You might ask.  Is it because I had so much fun the first time? Did I bomb my first one?  Well, the truth of the matter is that the Capstone teachers requested that I do it for their current batch of students as an example.  And because showing them a video just isn’t the same.   In short, my presentation was about my personal struggles regarding my limitations and how I decided to address those limitations.  I used Apples Keynote to piece together a complete presentation with slides, and a three minute video.   Blah blah blah…..

All in all my goal was to make my presentation into a story- with a beginning middle and end.  Because pictures are pretty, but story is king.

Desert Brute

March 2, 2009

Today I am working on this big brute character to improve my male anatomy, as well as my digital painting skills. Normally I  do extensive thumbnail sketches on paper, but working this way is helping me work and think faster on the fly. I’m learning quite a bit from these exercises. It’s also pretty funny to see the different direction I take things near the end.  Raaahhh!

Desert Character update

February 22, 2009

I’m pushing this character past my original vision, and incorporating more textures.  The cape is feeling a little more natural, and I’m working to give her costume a more leathery/weathered look.

Another character in the works.  I am very happy with her weapon.  I haven’t done much work with weapons, but I think this one fits the character very well.

Here be several character pieces that I am working to finish for my portfolio. Yeah that’s right, nothing but hot girls, and crazy colors! That’s me.  Kara is pretty much finished.  She might be my favorite so far.  The seated Queen is pretty swell, but I still have a bit to resolve.
